Music in the Park


Among the parks in the Chennai metropolitan city a park is selected to organise "The Music in the Park" programme every week on Saturday evenings so as to give an opportunity to the laymens to know about the Tamil Music and the Folk Arts. With this concept, this programme was inaugurated by the Chief Secretary to Government, Thiru.K.S.Sripathy, I.A.S., The Secretary to Government, Tourism and Culture Department Dr.V.Iraianbu, I.A.S., and the Commissioner of Art and Culture Thiru.P.A.Mani, I.F.S were also participated in the inaugural function held on 15.5.2009 at Arignar Anna Park, Rayapuram.

A Budding Artist Music concert, a Senior Musician's concert, Instrumental Music by the Government Music College Students and Folk Arts Progamme are the four cultural programmes normally held in this Music in the park Music Programme every week.

These programmes gives a platform for the Tamil Nadu Music College Students, encouragement for the new talents and for the upcoming young artists. By listening to the Tamil concert programmes given by the Senior Musicians, the public, laymen and music lovers come to understand the speciality of Tamil Traditional Music. Further through the Music in the Park programme, everyone come to know about the Folk Art and it gives an opportunity for the Folk Artists to perform folk programmes.

It is a welcoming note that by conducting such music programmes in the parks, the youngsters, the public, the laymen and music lovers coming to the park listen to the various music progammes. Further the response to folk music receives much attention and there is great applause from the public.

If "Music in the Park" Music progamme is conducted on every Saturday in anyone of the park, it would create an awareness among the public to know about the various Performing Arts. It would be a platform for the budding young artists and senior musicians. These concerts would reach the public and this scheme would create an opportunity for reviving the dying Folk Art forms.
